Overview

The DOSO Safespace Mentor Program is a structured, youth-centered initiative designed to support learners in primary, secondary, and high school by pairing them with trained university student mentors. The program focuses on academic support, personal development, and positive role modeling, creating safe and supportive relationships that help young learners thrive both in and out of the classroom.

Through consistent, meaningful engagement, the program nurtures confidence, strengthens study habits, and inspires learners to set and pursue educational and life goals.

Purpose and Goals

The Mentor Program is grounded in the belief that every child benefits from guidance, encouragement, and exposure to positive role models. The key goals of the program are to:

  • Improve academic performance and learning motivation
  • Build self-confidence and a positive self-image
  • Encourage goal-setting and long-term educational aspirations

Who the Program Serves

Mentees

The program serves learners from:

  • Primary schools
  • Secondary schools
  • High schools

Priority is given to learners who may benefit from additional academic support, encouragement, or positive mentorship due to social, economic, or educational challenges.

Mentors

Mentors are university students who demonstrate:

  • Strong academic standing or subject-area competence
  • Commitment to positive youth development
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Willingness to serve as role models and leaders

All mentors are carefully selected and oriented before being matched with learners.

How the Mentor Program Works

1. Recruitment and Screening

University students interested in becoming mentors apply through DOSO Safespace. Applicants are screened to ensure they align with the organization’s values, child protection standards, and program goals.

2. Training and Orientation

Selected mentors receive training that covers:

  • Effective mentoring and communication skills
  • Child and adolescent development
  • Academic support strategies
  • Ethical conduct and safeguarding principles
  • Cultural sensitivity and professionalism

This preparation ensures mentors are equipped to support learners responsibly and effectively.

3. Mentor–Mentee Matching

Mentors are thoughtfully paired with learners based on:

  • Academic needs and strengths
  • Age and grade level
  • Subject interests
  • Personality compatibility

This careful matching helps foster trust, comfort, and productive relationships.

4. Mentorship Sessions

Mentors meet regularly with their assigned learners through structured sessions that may include:

  • Homework assistance and study support
  • Reading and literacy activities
  • Exam preparation and academic planning
  • Goal-setting and progress reflection
  • Life skills discussions, including confidence-building and decision-making

Sessions are conducted in safe, approved environments such as schools, community centers, or designated learning spaces.

5. Ongoing Support and Supervision

DOSO Safespace provides continuous oversight to ensure quality and accountability. This includes:

  • Regular check-ins with mentors and mentees
  • Guidance and support for mentors
  • Monitoring progress and addressing challenges
