The Nishike Mkono , meaning “Hold My Hand”, is an ongoing initiative by the Domicile of Success Organization (Doso-Safespace), a registered non-governmental organization based in Mwanza, Tanzania. The program is designed to empower children from vulnerable backgrounds by providing them with essential resources that support their education, well-being, and long-term success.
The Challenge
While education in Tanzania is free up to the secondary level, children from low-income households often face significant barriers to consistent learning. Many students lack basic school essentials such as pens, pencils, notebooks, textbooks, uniforms, shoes, and bags. These shortages create challenges that extend beyond academics—they can affect children’s confidence, social inclusion, and ability to remain in school. Without proper support, students are at a higher risk of falling behind or dropping out entirely.
Our Solution
The Nishike Mkono program addresses these challenges by equipping children with the tools they need to succeed in school. The program targets boys and girls aged 8 to 15 years from selected elementary and secondary schools. Through collaboration with school administrators and student care officers, we identify students who face the greatest economic hardships, prioritizing those in the early years of their studies.
The program provides:
- Essential learning materials, including pens, pencils, and notebooks.
- Secure school bags to protect learning materials.
- School uniforms to ensure dignity and inclusion.
- School shoes for safe and comfortable attendance.
Each year, we support 10 students per school (5 boys and 5 girls), reaching 40 children twice annually.
Proven Impact
The Nishike Mkono program has already made a significant difference in the lives of children in Mwanza. Students who receive support display:
- Increased confidence and self-esteem.
- Greater participation in classroom activities.
- Improved academic performance and engagement.
These outcomes reinforce our belief that providing children with essential educational resources not only helps them succeed academically but also promotes social inclusion and resilience.
Organizational Capacity
The Nishike Mkono program has a proven track record of success. It has been successfully implemented in the past using our personal funding, demonstrating its effectiveness and the positive impact it has on children. Currently, the program is running in four schools, reaching children who need support the most.
We warmly welcome individuals and organizations who are interested in joining us to extend even more hands of support, helping ensure that more children have the resources they need to thrive academically and socially.
Program Goals and Evaluation
The Nishike Mkono program is an ongoing initiative, operating throughout the year. Our long-term goal is to directly benefit hundreds of children in Tanzania, equipping them with the resources they need to thrive academically and socially. Annual surveys with participating students help us monitor satisfaction, track academic progress, and refine program strategies to maximize impact.
