- Introduction
We are proud to officially mark the close of our Tree Planting Project in partnership with SOS Children’s Villages. This collaboration was rooted in a shared commitment to environmental restoration and nurturing a generation that understands the importance of protecting and sustaining the environment.
The project represents a significant step toward addressing climate challenges at the grassroots level while actively involving young people in meaningful environmental action. The project focused on launching the tree planting project and establishing the environmental clubs in public secondary schools and colleges in Mwanza. On Monday 24th at 12:00 PM we arrived at Mnarani secondary school, a place where our tree planning project was launched. We selected this school because of being the model school and also presence of the media for event coverage. We provided more than 650+ trees to the following schools: Mnarani secondary, Isenga A primary school, Shibula secondary school, Kayenze secondary school in Ilemela. And Igelegele secondary school, Igelegele primary school, Nyegezi secondary school, Kasese secondary school and Butimba Teachers College in Nyamagana. We had mentorship to club members and created champions leaders in each club just to represent other club members. We also had brainstorming questions and answers sections based on environmental issues to club members.
2. Launch Venue and Participation At Mnarani Secondary School
The journey began at Mnarani Secondary School, where students, environmental teachers, and project partners gathered with a shared vision of creating lasting environmental change.
The Tree planting activities were conducted within the school compound, symbolizing growth, renewal, and long-term impact. We had prayer from the invited pastor and later the head master lead in the section of planting trees. We had a training session from Mr. Alen Katabuzi about the essence of launching this project and the role of club members. Later we had an interview from both DoSo and SoS Leaders at Mnarani Podcast Radio 98.1 FM and recorded both conversations. The links are in YouTube here
3. Objectives of the Initiative
This initiative goes beyond planting trees. Its broader objectives include:
- Mentoring young people on environmental stewardship
- Strengthening school environmental clubs
- Promoting climate change awareness and action
- Transforming schools into greener and healthier learning environments
- Building critical thinkers based on the brainstorming questions
Through training sessions and practical engagement, students are equipped with knowledge, confidence, and responsibility to take climate action within their schools and communities.
4. Impact and Future Expansion
As the project expands to more schools across Mwanza, it aims to build a living legacy of sustainability, leadership, and community pride. The long-term vision is not only to increase tree
Through integrating environmental education with hands-on action, the initiative is growing more than trees; it is growing hope, responsibility, and a future shaped by the students themselves.
5. Conclusion
The launch of the Tree Planting Project marks the beginning of a transformative journey. Through strong partnerships, student engagement, and community collaboration, we are laying the foundation for sustainable development and environmental responsibility. All challenges that we encountered are part of the growth.
Together, we are building greener schools, empowered youth, and a resilient future for generations to come.
